About TKD

Korean martial arts in general can be traced back to the Koguryo dynasty (37 BC - 668 AD), but the arts practiced at this time bore little to no resemblance to modern TKD.

Modern TKD was formed during the 40s from Okinawan, Japanese and Chinese styles. After the Japanese occupation of Korea, there was nationalist fervor, and in 1955 the name of Tae Kwon Do was given to "Korean Karate" and a process was begun to utilize Korean arts to create a unique nationalist martial art.

During the 60s, TKD was governed by two major bodies, the ITF and the WTF. During this time, the art was standardized and the old Japanese based katas were replaced by newly created poomse, and the martial art moved more towards a sport, much in the way contemporary wushu was created as the national sport of China during this same time period. Tae Kwon Do is now, an official Olympic sport.

• The World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF) - The World Taekwondo Federation is the International Federation [IF] governing the sport of Taekwondo and is a member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations [ASOIF]. The WTF recognizes national Taekwondo governing bodies recognized by the NOC in the pertinent country, one in each country, as its members.


• Maryland State Taekwondo Association (MSTA) - MSTA promotes and sponsors the sport of Taekwondo within the State of Maryland and throughout the United States. We intended to seek membership in the National Association of State Taekwondo Organizations.


• United States of America Tae Kwon Do (USAT) - The US governing body for the Olympic Sport of Tae Kwon Do and responsible for affiliated WTF schools within the US. Responsible for hosting state, regional and national championships to select athlete representatives for the US Tae Kwon Do Team. In addition this organization is responsible for certifying World Certified Black Belts through the World Tae Kwon Do Federation.


• The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) - A nationally run non-profit organization aimed at providing venues of competition for all sports. Tae kwon Do is the fastest growing sport within the AAU with close to 20,000 athletes, coaches, and officials. Affiliated with other organizations and
  practically all sports, the AAU is the second largest Tae Kwon Do organization in the US.
